Many hospitals require employees to wear specific-colored scrubs. Sometimes this is to differentiate between departments, so it’s easier to identify physicians from nurses and surgeons. Other times it’s psychological since certain colors elicit certain emotions in people.

• White

  White was the main color physicians, nurses, and surgeons used to wear. The thinking back then was that white represented cleanliness and purity. But on a patient level, white scrubs caused headaches, creating eye strain and visual fatigue. This color is also very difficult to get blood stains out of.

• Purple

  Purple can put out mixed feelings, depending on the person. It’s not too hard on the eyes, so there isn’t a health risk to patients by wearing this color. Purple nurse gowns may be great when working with children.

• Red

  Red nurse gowns sometimes appear in an awareness campaign since you’re trying to teach how to avoid a health issue and red can embody that fear and make the point land harder.

• Green

  Green hospital gowns are one of the best colors you can choose for your scrubs since it’s associated with peace, healing, and tranquility. Lastly, green helps ease a surgeon’s eyestrain during surgery so they can focus.

• Yellow

  Yellow can be associated with happiness and positivity (think of the sun). Yellow scrubs may be a good idea for pediatric offices and hospice care, in an attempt to lift people’s moods.

• Pink

  Unlike red’s ability to evoke strong negative emotions, pink creates a visually soothing experience for the majority of people looking at it.

• Blue

  Blue gowns make people feel relaxed and calm, lowering blood pressure and easing anxiety. It even makes people trust you more.

• Brown

  Brown does give off vibes of warmth, earthy, and non-threatening.

1. Pre-Treat Your Scrubs

   Wash them separately in cold water with half a cup of vinegar to set the color of the scrubs and to prevent them from fading the first time

2. Save The Scrubs For Work

   We cannot stress enough that scrubs must be kept clean and disinfected to be appropriate and safe to wear to work. That is why you should reserve your scrubs for work alone.

3. Give Your Scrubs the VIP Treatment

   Scrubs require more thorough disinfecting than a normal tee shirt and jeans, it is important that you not mix them in with your other laundry. If you have any visible stains on your scrubs, we recommend treating them with a color-safe stain remover before washing.

4. Give Your Scrubs Two Scrubbings

   To properly disinfect your scrubs, you will need to send a load of scrubs through two wash cycles.

   First, turn all the scrubs inside out to prevent the scrubs from rubbing against each other and pilling. Then, send the scrubs through a regular cycle with cold water and regular detergent. Make sure the load size is set to large or extra-large, even if the load size is small because scrubs need plenty of room to move.

   Next, after all stains are removed, you may begin the second washing step. disinfect the scrubs using bleach. To begin this second step in the washing process, add 3/4 cup of color-safe bleach to your washing machine’s built-in bleach dispenser and wash the load on the normal setting with hot water. After you have completed both steps in the washing process, dry your scrubs on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes. This will kill even more bacteria.

5. Keep You Scrubs Fresh

   After your scrubs come out of the dryer fresh and clean, use a hot iron to press your scrubs. This is an important step in keeping your scrubs looking neat and maintaining a professional appearance in the workplace. It also kills more germs. Once you have pressed your scrubs, we recommend placing them in a clean, dry plastic bag to avoid contamination before you wear the scrubs.
